Today we invite you to take an almost “free ride” in northwest Missouri. Bring your bike. Bring your stroller or some groceries. Enjoy the air conditioning and some good company from other riders.
Welcome to the St. Joseph Transit, also called “The Ride,” operating as the public bus line and a service of the City of St. Joseph. Many in our community have noticed The Ride, or followed one around town – but few have actually taken note of the benefits The Ride offers. Recently St. Joseph Transit became a new member of the Saint Joseph Metro Chamber, leading more to take another look at this comfortable, affordable mode of transportation.
Logistically, The Ride offers numerous cross-city routes and allows riders to call in or request a route deviation to meet their needs, if possible. The buses are fully climate controlled and even offer a Nite Ride option for those wanting someone else to do the driving as they go to and from work shifts. Several covered bus stops can be found across town, and the fare is only $1. (It’s even less for children, and free for those six and under). If you’re a bicyclist, you can utilize new bike racks on the buses for your cross-town or around town routes, encouraging a more eco-friendly travel lifestyle. All buses are equipped to offer convenience to those with disabilities. Strollers are welcome, too.
Online, The Ride continues its customer-oriented message. The website offers detailed route information, an opportunity to request/book a route and many other features – such as history, a gas price comparison state-by-state and gas rates per state. Note: This is an interesting “down time” activity at work. You can actually enter details about your car’s gas mileage and your route, and then calculate precisely how much money you’d save if you took The Ride instead. A survey link allows riders to quickly share their suggestions, another interactive feature.
The logo itself, depicting the start of the Pony Express in St. Joseph, Mo., gives The Ride a local brand that’s easily recognizable and creates a sense of place and pride. Non-profit organizations often utilize the ad space offered around the exterior or interior of the bus, as well as businesses, helping educate the community about local causes. With every mile, The Ride continues to demonstrate convenience for customers and to carry out a very modern and cost-friendly approach to transportation in a smaller city.
A while back, I tried The Ride with a friend, and then later with my children. It was fun, easy and allowed us a new view of the surroundings. The other riders were experts at routes, so asking a few questions was simple and allowed us to engage in friendly conversation. If you haven’t done so, try The Ride yourself or with your family – it’s a great local use of a dollar.
Today Susan J. Campbell Copywriting Solutions recognizes The Ride as a public service, but also a continual message that St. Joseph, Mo., continues to move forward. Check it out soon, and share your experience.
